Camp NaNoWriMo: T-minus 3 days

Day 23: Scene List and Outline

Exercise: Create a list of your scenes and fit them into an outline.

This post is a bit late because this exercise took me a lot longer than I thought it would. I usually write out the outline in order, but the problem with that method is that it’s a lot harder to insert scenes without rewriting the whole outline. So I tried something different this time.

I wrote out every scene that I wanted to include on small index cards before arranging them in order on the floor (I made sure to vacuum ahead of time). While changing up the order to add new scenes was still a bit difficult because there were so many index cards, it was so much easier than writing the outline on paper. I did have one scene that ended up not fitting, but I have it handy in case I find a place for it when I actually start writing.

How do you outline? Do you have a way to insert scenes into it after the outline is completed?

I only outline a little bit, move ahead, and outline some more. I do it that way because I want to keep my options open and allow for new thoughts. I feel at a lost if I just write with no plan whatsoever (but I try not to overplan). At the same time I may write out a scene that I think is great for later (I use scriverner so everything stays organized). I’m not a linear writer lol! Anyway that’s how I do it. 😀
