For those who don’t know, NaNoWriMo is an abbreviation for National Novel Writing Month. It occurs every year in November, and millions of writers across the world sit down in front of their computers to write 50,000 words in thirty days. The founders of NaNo created Camp NaNoWriMo a few years ago when participants in the November event asked for more opportunities to participate in the competition.
It occurs twice in the summer. The first one this year took place in April, and the next one starts July 1st.
I try to participate at least once a year, and I love the face that I can get a substantial amount of writing done in such a short period of time. I’ve only completed the 50,000 words once. And while I’d love to hit that goal again, I’m just happy that I’m writing a piece that’s been simmering for a long time.
My plan for the July Camp NaNo is to write a whole novel in thirty-one days. That’s between 75,000 and 80,000 words in a month; I’m committing to 2,420 to 2,580 words per day. Mathematically, it is 100% doable. I’ll spend my whole morning with my fingers moving across the keyboard, starting bright and early at 8am and finishing at 12pm. Then I’ll take the afternoon to work on shorter pieces and read. Maybe I’ll even catch up on TV shows and work on my dog’s obedience training.
A good friend and fellow blogger, Emily, did a daily blog post about her NaNo status during Camp in April. I loved getting to see where she was in her word count, what sort of struggles she faced, and her ultimate accomplishment of finishing the 50,000 words despite getting sick halfway through the month and following behind on her word count.
So on July 1st, I’m going to continue writing my three normal posts a week. But I’ll also be including short summaries of how NaNo went that day. There’ll be my current word count, how many more words I need to reach my goal, any struggles I’m having, and any triumphs.
This is a big plan, and I hope that I can make it work.
Do you participate in NaNoWriMo? And are you planning on doing Camp NaNo this July?
